Genealogical tree; the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin

(By wood inlay, and bird carvings)

The exhibition of “Darwin’s evolutionary theory” at museums had difficulty: the stuffed Darwin’s Finches are hard to get.  In 2012, I suggested my project to make the replica of them with bird carvings that are made by ornithological accuracy, to the National Museum of Science.

Much support from the museum and the Yamashina Institute for ornithology enabled me to get the chance to see the stuffed birds, and to collect the reference materials for two years.  Having drawn the accurate patterns, I carved and painted the 15 species of the Finches and one species supposed to be the common ancestor, both male and female.  Very grateful enough, Dr. Peter Grant, who is the world famous scholar on these birds, has continued giving me much advice at each stage from carving birds through to paint on them.  I am looking forward to having this genealogical tree exhibited at museums all over the world.
